What is the purpose of the Apgar score?

The Apgar score is a quick and standardized method used to assess a newborn's health immediately after birth, specifically at one minute and five minutes of life. It evaluates five criteria: appearance (skin color), pulse (heart rate), grimace response (reflexes), activity (muscle tone), and respiration (breathing effort). Each criterion is scored from 0 to 2, with the total score ranging from 0 to 10.

This assessment helps healthcare providers determine how well the newborn tolerated the birthing process and whether they may need immediate medical attention. Scores are interpreted as follows:

• A score of 7 to 10 indicates that the baby is generally in good health,

• Scores between 4 and 6 may indicate that the baby requires some assistance,

• Scores below 4 usually suggest that the baby requires urgent medical intervention.

While other choices might involve aspects of care related to childbirth, they do not capture the primary focus of the Apgar score, which is to evaluate a newborn's immediate health status.
